The Narcissist and the Empath

Featured in LIGHT WORK, Episode #4

“What’s your take on (and advice for) the narcissistic vs. empath dynamic? Have you had this experience? How did you recover?”

If you identify as holistically-inclined, spiritually-seeking, or sensitive… you have likely experienced the narcissist/empath dance. In some ways, a narcissist and a New Age’r (let’s just use that term for the sake of this conversation) with low self-esteem have a lot in common: they’re both trying to get approval from outside sources to fill the hole in their Soul. The narcissist will grind and grind, and the empath will give and give… until she just can’t give anymore. If the empath can cut those cords and leave that situation, she’ll finally see: “I was doing the best I could. I was loving and I was listening. And I was over-giving. I was over-tolerant.” She reaches this beautiful place where she realizes that she is enough.

And then the realization sets in that you don’t need to be someone else’s source of energy and clarity. You will no longer cry the tears that somebody needs to cry for themselves. You won’t be doing personal growth for somebody else anymore. You will feel what you are feeling, and put yourself at the center of your life again. Where you belong.
